Throwback Thursday

I'm working on photos from 1993, sad and happy to say. Sad because they've been hidden away for so long. Happy to look at them now and reflect on the good times.

Here's one. We were in Durango, CO in July 1993 celebrating a family wedding. One day we road on the Durango-Silverton railroad, which was totally fun and not your everyday happening. Here they are, ages 3, 6 and 7. You gotta love the expressions on their faces. One exhausted, one peaking over a shoulder and one ready to bound off that train and head into the next adventure. I truly miss these days.

Uptown Funk!

I love the song Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. Imagine my delight when I discovered this U-Tube video of this 21st century hit with 20th century dancers. Ya gotta watch it, it's too much fun!

Book Ends: The Museum of Extraordinary Times

I love to listen to books on CD. In my car or in the sewing lab, they are such good company. Some authors are easier for listening than others. Jodi Piccoult, Chris Bojhalian, Alice Hoffman are a few that come to mind.

I just finished The Museum of Extraordinary Things which in true fashion for Alice Hoffman is extraordinary. This author is an extremely talented storyteller.

From the New York Times...Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario behind The Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney Island freak show that thrills the masses. An exceptional swimmer, Coralie appears as the Mermaid in her father’s “museum,” alongside performers like the Wolfman and the Butterfly Girl. One night Coralie stumbles upon a striking young man taking pictures of moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River.

The dashing photographer is Eddie Cohen, a Russian immigrant who has run away from his community and his job as a tailor’s apprentice. When Eddie photographs the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, he becomes embroiled in the mystery behind a young woman’s disappearance. And he ignites the heart of Coralie.

Alice Hoffman weaves her trademark magic, romance, and masterful storytelling to unite Coralie and Eddie in a tender and moving story of young love in tumultuous times. The Museum of Extraordinary Things is, “a lavish tale about strange yet sympathetic people”

I suggest you give it a listen. The characters are well developed and interesting people.

For the most part...

The house reconstruction is finished. What remains is mainly replacing furniture that was damaged in the flood. Here are a few pics to share.

A new front door. In the end we decided to stay with the style we had. It so defines this house floor plan and I sort of like it. We opted to have it stained very dark and change the knobs to a very dark finish as well. I love how the light filters through the opening on the right.

This bar area is actually in the middle of the house. We removed columns and opened it to the rest of the rooms in the house. It is now such and inviting open airy space. The stools were delivered just last week and make such a strong statement. They are beautiful.

And then of course there is the kitchen. I love a white kitchen, In this space especially as it is at the back of the house which is north facing. It gets good light but not a lot of direct sun. White brightens things a lot. I love the dark stain on the island as a contrast to the cabinet surround. Cooking in this space will be oh so much fun!.

And then there's that floor

I love this floor. It is a wood grain tile and just beautiful.

The master bath room floor now grouted. WOW!

And the fireplace surround is completed. The logs and screening will be removed and a more contemporary insert added.

Counter tops arrive

The kitchen cabinets are white on the periphery and the island is stained dark brown. The counter tops are quartz and reverse. Dark on the white cabinets and creamy white on the island. They are truly beautiful. You can see some of the flooring in these photos. It was interrupted when the counter tops showed up early.

Tilework Commences

In the master shower, we closed in the back wall to add a niche for soap products and made the shower larger. The tiles are very contemporary larger white tiles with waves. Here it is before grouting. The seat will match the counter tops.

The master bath floor is a hexi tile that is beige and white. Some of the tiles repeat the wavy lines of the shower wall. I love this floor.

We removed the mantles in both sides of the fireplace and tiled  to the ceiling on each side with very large rectangular tiles. They are a mottled grungy grey. Very cool!

Lookie-See: Bird Tales

When picking lemons, i discovered this tiny little hummingbird nest. there were two birds, who we named George and Gracie. Who knows why! Over the course of about 5 days, the went from barely visible above the top of the nest to not being able to fit in the nest. Mama never got too excited when I was around. I didn't hover, just staying long enough to catch a couple of photos each day.

I wanted to tell the story of George and Gracie. What better way than through digital scrapbooking media. There are so many wonderful products from which to choose.

The Cabinets are Coming

Next up was the placement of cabinets. This is a view from the front door. The column on at the corner of the the bar was removed; the one across from it was reduced. The view from the front door is so much more expansive. I love that deep chocolate wall.

In the bar area, the wall nest to the door way was removed.  A wine fridge and other bar elements will be centered on the kitchen wall viewed through the new expanded doorway.

a kitchen start here.

Getting Ready

For the good stuff. The mantles have been removed from both sides of the fireplace. It will be tiled with very large tiles.

And the drywall has been completed.

Giant mirrors have been removed from the master bath.

And lots of clean white LED lighting has been added to ceilings in most rooms.

Demo in progress

In early January, the next level of demolition began. We have decided to make a few changes in the house that we think will open it more and give it a lightly contemporary look.

Removing walls:

and columns:

and debris:

What a mess!

Craft Napa

“If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good.”
~Dr. Seuss

In January, Caite and I took a girl trip to Napa California and attended Craft Napa. We stayed at the Embassy Suites, where the classes were held. She chose one class: Indigo Dyeing and i chose another Finding Symbols in Art. We ate out each evening at some very nice restaurants in Napa. For our finale, we treated ourselves to massages at the Silverado Spa. We laughed as we left town. We never once went to a wine tasting. Huh!

I loved this time crafting with my girl. We used to do that all the time when she was young. She's back at it. What a very fun girl trip!

Good Read: A Gentleman in Moscow

In other words...

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov has never worked a day in his life, and must give up his luxury sweet and belongings to live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

The first half of the book creates a thorough and gorgeous visual of the hotel and it's occupants. We are being immersed fully into this setting. Nothing is without purpose. Each moment and person is leading somewhere.

Full of  humor and philosophical wisdom, this book has a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another. I have tagged all the things I wish to remember and there are many. Here are a few of my favorites.

"If patience wasn't so easily tested, then it would hardly be a virtue."

"When fate hands something down to posterity, it does so behind it's back."

"Some might wonder that the two men should consider themselves to be old friends, having only known each other for four years.; but the tenure of friendship has never been governed by the passage of time."

And finally "What matters in life is not whether we receive a round of applause; what matters is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the uncertainty of acclaim."

This is a revelation of a life well lived. It's a smart book about a wise man. It starts slow but builds delightfully. do not put it down.

Trust me, he can’t leave his hotel. You won’t want to.

OMG!

In October I received an email that no one ever wants to get. It was from the Homeowners Association in the desert. They saw water seeping from our home. That is not good.

Come to find out, a connector between a water line and a toilet cracked and water flowed for days.
Insurance has been awesome. A crew was on the job with 3 hours of notification but the damage was done. Here are some photos of the mess.

The kitchen. There used to be cabinets and an island.

 The bar area.

The fridge and a desk were here.

The master bath as seen through the walls of the bedroom.

If there was a toilet, you could sit on it and wave to people in the back yard. I show you these because I am going to show you over time how my house is being put back together. They say the reconstruction will be complete by May 1. I'll keep you posted.

It's a Repeat

For this year, I wanted to try to do something for 100 days straight. Somethings require that you are home and we travel. Some things require a specific piece of equipment and that is not always handy. I didn't want to take a photo a day or do an art project a day because I really didn't want to end up spending time on something I really didn't want. So, I decided what I needed most was to stretch.

I play golf maybe 4 times a week and the left side gets tighter than the right. Age has also found me and that makes for tight joints. I am sure most of you can relate. So first thing...even before I get out of bed, I stretch. Then I stretch again when the coffee is brewing. And last thing at night. I've been at it since the first of the year and it's working. I am slowly seeing results. Forty one days now but who's counting.

My Word for the Year
